In a surprising twist today, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC unexpectedly closed the prosecution’s case in the trial ofthe former President of the Nigerian Bar Association– MrPaul Usoro who is undergoing a trial for receiving his legal fees from Akwa Ibom State government which the EFCC alleges cis proceeds of money laundering.
This came after the prosecution informed the court yesterday that they hope to call another witness today after the cross examination of PW2 but surprisingly today they opted to close their case.
The prosecution of the PW2 lasted for three days . At somepoint during the cross examination today, the PW2 who was allowed who was allowed to sit down in the witness box stood up from his sit when he was faced with hot fire of cross examination from the defence counsel .
Under cross examination today, the PW 2 told the court that the EFCC relied on the statement of PW1 to file the charges against the Defendant and the Defendant was never confronted with the PW1’s statement prior to filing the charges to ascertain its veracity. Chief Offiong Offiong SAN informed the PW2 that PW1 abandoned her statement to the EFCC and gave different testimony in court, PW2 responded that he was not in court when the PW1 testified and cannot speak on whatever she said.
The defence informed the court that they will be filing a no case submission. The matter was adjourned to 12th of March
